Excess Local Extinction to AXP 1E 2259+586 in SNR CTB 109
Abstract
We estimate a new distance of 4 kpc to supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 109 and anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 2259+586 by analyzing HI and CO spectral data. There is a difference between the previously-published reddening extinction of Av =6.3+/-1.8 towards the AXP and our HI extinction of Av 3 towards the SNR. Using archival X-ray data on the system, we find that the column density of 1022 cm-2 towards the AXP by Chandra observations is almost two times higher than the column density of 5x1021 towards the SNR's shell by XMM-NEWTON observations. This confirms an excess local extinction around AXP 1E 2259+586 therefore supports our distance estimate of 4 kpc to the system. The new distance leads to a normal SN explosion energy of 1051 erg s-1 for the SNR.
